3 FREE Ways to Have Fun at Work and Build a Stronger Team!

"When people engage in play, they step out of who they think they should be and show up as their true and authentic self.” - Kai Dickens

Yesterday, I had the awesome honor of nerding out and chatting with the CEO and Founder of PLAYOLOGY, Kai Dickens.

Kai is an inspiring Executive Leadership Coach and Team Building Consultant who's developed a FUN and unique program that helps organizations and teams elevate creativity, connection, and cooperation by leveraging play as a vehicle for improving trust and communication in the workplace.

In honor of International Have Fun at Work Day on January 28th, Kai shared three ways every leader can bring joy, laughter and positive vibes to their organizations.

1. IMPROMPTU DANCE BREAK - The amazingness of this activity is that it's simple and effective! Grab a speaker, queue up some upbeat music, crank it up and have your team dance it out. Everything goes – all rhythm (on or off beat) is allowed and encouraged! This activity is great because dancing gets the blood pumping and the music and movement will raise the energy level of the room.

2. IN-OFFICE SCAVENGER HUNT. If you thought scavenger hunts outside of the office were awesome - this one is super simple and lots of fun. Instead of giving your team a list of items to find, let the alphabet be their guide. Start with the letter A, and have teams venture on a timed, in-office quest to find one item for each letter of the alphabet. WARNING: Be ready for tons of laughs and silliness. This activity is great because it helps foster relationships and strengthens bonds, while improving communication and problem solving skills.

3. SERVE YOUR COMMUNITY. Spread good vibes by giving back to the community. A simple option may include volunteering at a local food bank or getting the team together to make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and a few blessing bags. Getting the team together to pay it forward and make a positive difference in the lives of others, will help them create meaningful memories that form positive emotional connections, which connects them to a cause bigger than themselves.

As with all of these activities, the main thing is for your team to engage with one another on a personal level while having fun, but one of the most exciting things about these activities, is that when people engage in play, they step out of who they think they should be and show up as their true and authentic self.

And that’s what great culture is all about!
